The Japan Academy of Periodontology was organized as far back as 23 years ago. What started as only 31 members is now a large organization of over 1400 members with five chapters all over Japan.
In 1979, three of us, Dr. Hitoshi Kawasaki, the first president of our organization, Dr. Eiji Funakoshi, the current director, and myself, attended the conference of American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). It was in the airplane our way back home where we began talking about creating the similar organization in our country. We were completely taken by the contagious enthusiasm of AAP. There, we found what we, Japanese periodontists, have long been awaiting.
Our eagerness and magma of energy was already unstoppable at that point. We need a place for all the Japanese Dental practitioners who are interested in periodontology to be able to bring even a piece of clinical or X-ray photograph, or, say, one piece of model, a tooth, gum, pocket, anything, and there, we can discuss anything of our interest! We should have biannual, or even annual conference where everyone actively participate in discussions and educate each other on periodontology. No, this is not just self-serving for us; wouldn't it be wonderful for patients as well? Three of us kept going on and on until, finally in 1983, we made the first periodontology conference happen.
This academy, unique of its kind in Japan, was formed in order to bring an opportunity for practitioners to be able to have vigorous discussions, and that will serve our patients by better dental health and periodontal treatment.
As you are all aware, this organization is yours. That means those who participate make the organization what it should be. We should all actively take part in, get to know one another, discuss our issues openly, educate each other and learn from each other. And, why not take advantage of enjoying this great opportunity?
I believe that each members can come together, develop the network based on trust and cooperation and work hand in hand toward the same goal: to push forward for progress and further improvement of periodontal treatment in our country.
Dr. Fumio Suzuki
Large majority of our members are clinical dentists. We have annual national conferences and also educational seminars for chapters several times a year. Through these conferences and seminars, we have been providing our members with the most up-to-date information closely related to periodontology by case presentation and various lectures.
We have been certified as its affiliate member organization by Science Council of Japan since 2002, and we have been an active participant to Japanese Society of Periodontology as well as American Academy of Periodontology. In 2005, we have become a sister organization with ACADEMY OF PERIODONTOLOGY R.O.C. (TAIWAN). Now, we have become one of the internationally recognized periodontal organizations.
Since 2002, we have started diplomate system for specialists in order to give high quality periodontal treatment for patients. From 2006, we have opened our door to dental hygienists, staff of pediatric dentistry and they are now our welcomed members as well as doctors. All the people who work in this field is bringing in their expert knowledge to help improve each other.
Also, our organization has become an NPO since June 2006, and we are looking forward to serve more general public by holding educational seminars aimed at wide range of non-specialists.
We are a group of people with strong interest in periodontology.
Let's come together and have enthusiastic and vigorous discussions. Communication is never meant to be one-way. This is your hub where all the information and relevant opinions are brought together for you to explore and immerse yourself in. Our keyword is participation!
